Press Release: Sports Group established by to lobby for leisure facilities in Saffron Walden

Sports: Tag RugbyMonday 9th June 2014: has announced the formation of a group of Saffron Walden based sports and leisure organisations to review existing facilities and to lobby for increased provision in town. The sports group is chaired by John Lodge who is a management team member and Essex County Councillor for the Saffron Walden Division

Cllr John Lodge said “Saffron Walden has only one third of the outdoor playing facilities and children’s play area facilities recommended by the National Playing Fields Association, making it difficult for residents to take necessary exercise and leading to the likelihood of greater health issues. As Saffron Walden grows, the lack of sports facilities is becoming ever more acute.  Earlier this year however, Uttlesford District Council adopted a new Planning Guide which removed the requirements for the developers of new housing to make any contribution towards sports facilities.  UDC’s draft new Local Plan would adopt the same policy for the next 17 years.”

John Lodge continued “ has therefore established the Saffron Walden Sports Lobby Group to identify what future sports provision is most needed and to lobby UDC to change their planning policies, redress the lack of existing provision and ensure that all future housing developments contribute to the provision of new sports and other open space facilities.”

The Saffron Walden Sports Lobby Group will hold its inaugural meeting the week of June 9th, where 12 local sports organisations will be represented as well as Saffron Walden Town Council.
