Papers: John Lodge “Danger of losing what’s special”

Saffron Walden resident, John Lodge, writes to this week’s papers. He is the Independent for Residents prospective candidate for the Essex County Council elections on 2nd May 2013. In his letter he tells people why he is standing.

John Lodge writes:

Since my intended candidacy for the county council was announced in your pages last week, I have been encouraged by the number of people who have offered me their wholehearted support for the campaign.

There is no doubt that most people see that the dead hand of the party whip gets in the way of the interests of our town and villages being properly represented in Chelmsford.

But I have also been asked two questions – “why on earth would you put yourself through this?” and “surely the local plan is a district council issue, so why are you standing for the county council?”

The answers are straightforward: I have enjoyed the benefits of living in this wonderful area for 40 years, my family has grown up here and I can see a real danger of what is special being lost for future generations if we do not do something to protect Saffron Walden from unsustainable overdevelopment.

It is true that it is Uttlesford District Council that will (eventually) produce a Local Plan, but it is the county council that needs to ensure the highway infrastructure is in place and that our children can access the good education that they are entitled to expect.
