Press Release: UDC housing proposals will ruin the fabric, character and life of Saffron Walden

Uttlesford residents urged to respond to UDC housing plan before 23rd July

Last week saw the successful launch of’s campaign to oppose Uttlesford District Council’s new proposals to force large housing developments on Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow, Newport, Elsenham and Takeley.

The campaign is now moving into its second phase – to mobilise Saffron Walden residents to respond to UDC’s consultation and have their say on UDC’s housing proposals.  With only two weeks to go until the consultation closes on 23 July, residents need to act quickly. campaigners will be in Saffron Walden Market Square this Saturday and will be canvassing across Saffron Walden over the weekend. spokesman, Dan Starr, said: “Saffron Walden needs to make its voice heard.  The villages in Uttlesford have been much better at this in the past and we need to make sure that Saffron Walden is properly represented.  If residents don’t participate and respond by 23 July, it will be too late.

“UDC’s new housing plan is flawed, it’s completely unsuitable for Uttlesford and is contradicted by all of the evidence they have produced over the last 5 years.  Building a massive new estate the size of Newport on to the east side of Saffron Walden is ridiculous.  Almost all of the services, jobs and main roads are west of Saffron Walden – we can’t cope with the existing traffic, let alone with another 2,000 cars having to drive across town and through residential areas.  It will bring hideous traffic congestion, breach legal EU air pollution limits, and undermine the foundations of our historic buildings.

“As well as ignoring the traffic congestion and air pollution, UDC’s plan completely ignores jobs for Saffron Walden.  Employers need good transport links.  Many of the industrial premises in the town are empty because it’s too difficult to get to the M11; yet UDC are proposing to put virtually all of the new employment land even further away from the M11.  We’ll have 880 more homes and no more jobs.

“Telling UDC what you think of their plan is straight forward and only takes a few minutes. Please respond to the UDC consultation either using the tools at, or look out for one of our campaigners this weekend, or directly send an email to UDC at

As part of their campain, this week have produced: representatives will be delivering these to 2,300 houses across the town over the next 10 days. urges all Uttlesford residents oppose the plan and say no to building in existing settlements. Public consultation on the UDC Plan closes on 23 July 2012.
